Pitching Life

Scott Lauber writes about baseball at Delaware Online. His piece today is about lessons a young pitcher had to learn, and it seems to me that they are also lessons for the rest of us. The pitcher is Cole Hamels of the Phillies. He had a great first two season in the major leagues in 2007 and 2008, and was named most valuable player in the Phils’ World Series run. His 2009 season, however, was a huge disappointment. Last year it was obvious that he was often struggling, and he sometimes lost his composure.

Now, in Florida for spring training, Hamels said, “I made it a lot harder than the game should be. It’s being able to feel comfortable in all the preparations I’ve done and when I go out there, just let it fly and not really stress about the results.”

He also said, “Even though you might have games where everything goes well, you’ll have games where times are tough. You really have to learn a little more about yourself.”

Sounds like a good approach to life to me.

“You’ll have games where times are tough. You really have to learn a little more about
yourself.” It’s those tough times that force me to ask – “Who am I when I am not
“successful?” What part of me did I leave behind in my quest for the external markers?
I guess life trips us up to remind us to remember!

Deb…now there is a question I really like: “What part of me did I leave behind in my quest for the external markers?” And here is a quote from Hamels that I missed first time through his press conference: “I understand I’m only human, and I’m only as good as I allow myself to be.”
